Tongue device to aid disabled

Tongue device to aid disabledA new device that uses a tiny magnet can help disabled people steer a wheelchair or operate a computer using only the tip of the tongue.
The magnet, the size of a grain of rice, lets people direct the movement of a cursor across a computer screen or a powered wheelchair around a room.
It is easily implanted under the tongue, the team at the Georgia Institute of Technology said.
A headset with magnetic field sensors detects the magnetic tracer on the tongue and transmits wireless signals to a portable computer, which can be carried on the user's clothing or wheelchair.
The team reported on their device to a meeting of the Rehabilitation Engineering and Assistive Technology Society of North America in Washington.

The robot you swallow to test for cancer

by Pat Hagan

A robot that is swallowed and travels through the body looking for cancer is being developed by scientists.

The pill-sized gadget will be able to test for tumours inside the body and transmit findings back to a computer.

It will also have a miniature video camera to capture around 40,000 images of the intestines.

It will be able to test for tumours inside the body and transmit findings back to a computer.

Researchers behind the revolutionary device predict it could eventually save thousands of patients from painful biopsies or surgery to investigate cancer of the gastrointestinal tract, which affects up to 2,000 people a year in England and Wales.
